ANNOUNCEMENTS

The rose in the chancel is a “peace rose.”  It symbolizes our prayers for peace in a troubled world.

This morning's chancel flowers are placed in honor of those who work tirelessly for social justice and world peace.

The lay reader today is Beth Babbitt Borst.

You are welcomed and seated today by Nancy Anderson, John Betts, Eric Erickson, Jean Herbert and Sandy Whiteley.

The greeter this morning is Beth Babbitt Borst.

Thank you to Kristen and Chris Julcher for hosting today’s coffee hour.  Thank you to Lacey and David Ogbolumani for hosting last week.

Thanks to Aspasia and Elizabeth for sharing their music with us today.  Our opening and closing hymns are melodies written by Ludwig van Beethoven who once remarked “Handel is the greatest composer who ever lived. I would bare my head and kneel at his grave.”

Our featured composer today is George Frideric Handel (16851759), who was a German-born British musician and a leading composer of the Baroque era. Born in Germany as Georg Friederich Händel, he lived in England during most of his adult life. His most famous works are Messiah, an oratorio set to texts from the King James Bible, Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks. Drawing on the techniques of the great composers of the Italian Baroque, he influenced many composers who came after him including Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and his music helped lead the transition in compositional style from the Baroque to the Classical era.

You are invited to join the virtual prayer circle at First Congregational Church.  It is a wonderful way to develop a richer prayer life and stay connected to the needs of those in our congregation and around us.  An e-mail is sent around weekly or so with a list of people to pray for and a suggested prayer for the week.  If you are interested in being part of the church's virtual prayer circle or if you have a prayer concern you would like to offer up, please send a note to  joysandconcerns@gmail.com.  We want to respect privacy so we ask that you seek a person's permission before offering up their needs for prayer.  We look forward to hearing from you!  Pam Daniels, Prayer Circle Coordinator

Join the Parade.  The CROP Walk Volunteers are making a small float to pull in the walk this fall.  We are working on the papier mache and decorations each Sunday this summer after worship.  The theme every year is We Walk Because They Walk.  We are making large pieces of food and one-dimensional figures of children from around the world.  Our church name and LOGO will also appear.  A young man from Inter-Faith Action Council will be helping.  You don't have to be an artist!  Parents to help with construction activities and design, etc would be very welcome.  Contact Laura Wilson with your ideas and Elmer’s glue.

Think Green!  Check out our big, green frog in the Narthex for tips on conservation.  How about using cloth bags instead of plastic  when you go out shopping?  Free tote bags with the frog. Faith and Public Issues
