A Volunteer Opportunity - Hands-on help for one of our Benevolence Recipients! Evanston Day Nursery would like our help for some fall clean-up and spruce-up activities at their facility. Bring your energy and enthusiasm to church and we'll carpool over to: Evanston Day Nursery from 8:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 27th. Contact Lyn Page, Benevolence/Outreach Committee, if you'd like to come for just part of the time, or for more information.(847) 475-3943 or lpage@oakton.edu.
Magazines needed - Please save your old magazines. Starting mid-October, there will be a box in the narthex for the donation of magazines for the Warming Center. The Warming Center is our weekly, Thursday afternoon hospitality center for the homeless which is open from November through March. Our guests enjoy reading news, sports, and entertainment. Reader’s Digest is always a favorite.
Hilda’s Place Volunteers Needed - On the first Saturday night of each month, our church is responsible for providing dinner for the 30 or so residents of Hilda's Place, a homeless shelter located in the basement of the Lake Street Church. This is a rewarding and fun activity, and much appreciated by the residents. It's a great service opportunity for a family or two or three people who might like to work together. If you are able to help out, please call Elaine Frangedakis at 847-332-2618 or email at mcfran@ameritech.net.
Our service today features the music of Flor Peeters. Peeters (1903 -1986) was a Belgian composer, organist, and teacher. In 1923, Peeters began teaching in Mechelen, Belgium, at the famous Lemmens Institute of Music while serving as organist at the cathedral in that same city. As an organist and teacher, he enjoyed great renown giving concerts and liturgical master classes all over the world.
Our sermon hymn, “All Who Love and Serve Your City,” is a new hymn for our congregation. Eric Routley (1917 – 1982), regarded as one of the most influential persons in English and American church music during the twentieth century, composed this hymn text in 1966 while reflecting on the recent riots in Oakland, California.
