This morning’s anthem, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” was written by Thomas A. Dorsey, the most influential figure in the gospel song movement, when his first wife died in 1932. It has become the most popular black gospel song ever written, largely due to its use by Martin Luther King, Jr., in the civil rights movement. In 1932, Dorsey became Choral Director of Chicago’s Pilgrim Baptist Church and held that position for forty years. This morning’s offertory anthem was composed by Dr. Keith Hampton, Founder and Artistic Director of the Chicago Community Chorus, and Director of Music Ministries of Chicago’s Park Manor Christian Church.
