Introducing the Distinguished Preacher Series

Worship is at the heart of our life as a faith community. Each Sunday we gather to give thanks, to pray, to sing, to celebrate and to pause for a moment as we listen for the word of God that can be spoken in so many different ways.

At First Congregational Church of Evanston, we enjoy a traditional worship style that weaves together the fundamentals of our faith while also exploring new ideas that address the challenges of faith in a modern world. We do this with sermons, scripture readings, prayers, music and more.

We offer a worship service that respects the dignity of every worshipper. Our services speak to both the head and the heart. They are firmly grounded in the message of the Gospels, but are also timely and relevant. As we reflect on the longstanding traditions of our faith, we also grapple with the implications – and the responsibilities - of living out the message of our faith every day in our community and in our world.

Q & A about Sunday Worship at First Congregational Church of Evanston

When?   Sunday mornings at 10:00 am.

Where?   In our sanctuary located at 1445 Hinman Avenue (at Grove Street), Evanston, IL 60201, adjacent to Raymond Park near downtown Evanston. Enter the sanctuary through the main entrance – the blue doors in the portico facing Hinman Avenue. This entry is also handicap accessible with a ramp leading to the portico and the sanctuary entrance. The church can also be entered through side doors along Lake Street.

Children?   At FCCE, children are an integral part of our community and are always welcome in worship. Activity sheets and crayons are available to keep small hands busy. Every service includes a Children’s Message in which the children hear a special message from the Minister. A nursery is available in the sanctuary where children age three and younger can wiggle and play with our loving caregivers.

Children ages four through 3rd grade can also attend a special “Children’s Church” specifically designed for young people. All of these activities are open to visitors.

Parking?   On-street parking is available on all the streets surrounding the sanctuary, especially those east of Hinman Avenue. Additional parking can be found near Raymond Park.

Length?   Our worship service is typically one hour.

Dress?   There is no dress code and you are invited to dress comfortably. Though members tend to dress with respect for the occasion of worship and the opportunity to be in fellowship with one another, styles vary widely, especially during the summer months. You’ll see anything from jeans to slacks to “Sunday Best.”

Music?   Music is a vital component of worship at FCCE. Our outstanding choir is supported by a professional quartet and a Skinner 3 manual and 32 rank pipe organ. Many talented members and friends of all ages contribute special musical offerings to our worship services throughout the year. Our musical styles vary from classical to gospel to contemporary composers.

Communion?   Communion is offered on the first Sunday of each month and on special days in the church calendar. Communion at FCCE is “open table” – available to all.

Fellowship?   Members of the community gather after worship in Fellowship Hall or in the church narthex for snacks, beverages and friendly conversation. Here, the community has a chance to connect and share with one another after the blessing of worship.

Open & Affirming?   First Congregational Church of Evanston is an Open & Affirming congregation that welcomes all persons regardless of age, abilities, race, gender and sexual orientation, religious or political persuasions.
